The village originally grew around the site of a medieval chapel dedicated to St Mary, which belonged to the monks of Balmerino Abbey a Cistercian monastery founded in 1229. A historic holy spring well, known as Our Lady's Well or Chapel Well, sat near the medieval chapel site. Local records indicate the area was historically referred to as the Chapelton of the Virgin before changing its name around the time of the Scottish Reformation. Gateside expanded to include the older farm town, the hamlet of Edensbank, and a 19th century roadside expansion known as Edentown or Edenshead. The community thrived in the 19th century as an industrial hub, most notably housing the Gateside Mills, which produced precision wooden bobbins and shuttles to supply the Scottish flax and jute trades as well as international textile markets in India. The nearest large city is Perth, Perthshire, although Edinburgh is only half an hour away, and Glasgow one hour away.
