The beach is composed of dark volcanic basalt sand washed down from the surrounding tiers of geometric basalt columns. These rock formations are part of the Paleocene era lava flows that erupted when the North Atlantic Ocean began to split open. The sea stack overlooking the beach is historically nicknamed "Prison Rock. According to Hebridean folklore, the castle lokking structure was utilized in the late 1670s by a jealous Clan Macleod chief to imprison his wife, Marion Macleod, as a punishment for her alleged infidelity.
