Scotsman Walking Wearing Kilt By A Castle On Spring History Visit To Argyll And Bute Scotland

Tour Scotland short 4K Spring travel video clip of a Scotsman wearing a Kilt and Sporran and walking by daffodils on ancestry, genealogy, history visit and trip to a castle in Argyll and Bute, Britain, United Kingdom. Long before the current stone tower was erected, a 12th century dwelling existed on the site during the era of Somerled, the celebrated warrior and King of the Isles. According to local historical accounts, the original Clan MacDonald stronghold at Saddell provided crucial refuge to Robert the Bruce during the First War of Scottish Independence in the early 14th century before he fled further to Dunaverty Castle. The current four storey stone fortress was constructed between 1508 and 1512 by David Hamilton, the Bishop of Argyll. He built it as his primary residence using stones harvested from the then ruined Saddell Abbey. The Bishop later exchanged the castle with his half brother, the Earl of Arran, who traded it to the MacDonald family. It served as a vital bastion for the Clan Donald for many decades. Because the MacDonalds allied with Irish forces against the English crown, Thomas Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex, raided Kintyre in 1558 under the orders of Queen Mary I. The castle was ransacked and left completely burned and ruined. In 1607, King James VI forfeited the MacDonald lands in Kintyre and transferred ownership to Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll. The Campbells held the estate for nearly 400 years. In 1650, the castle was leased to William Ralston on the strict condition that he completely reroof and repair the building within two years.
