Ayton is a red sandstone mansion built in between 1845 and 1851 in the Scots Baronial style by architect James Gillespie Graham. It replaced a medieval peel tower that burnt down in 1834. Author Mark Twain visited in 1873 and purchased a dining room mantelpiece from the house. Further, additions were made to the mansion in the 1860s and 1870s. in early 2026, the estate, including 160 acres and several cottages, was purchased by comedian Alan Carr, with plans for the restoration to be featured in a Disney series.
