Like many such prehistoric monuments, their exact function is unknown, though they are generally associated with ceremonial, ritual, or territorial practices of early inhabitants. Several prostrate stones found in the immediate vicinity, including one built into a nearby drystone dyke, are thought to be the fallen remains of the original ring.
