Culross With Music On Outlander History Visit To The Coast Of West Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland 4K travel video with Scottish music, on Outlander, ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to Culross, Scottish Gaelic: Cuileann Ros, on the coast of West Fife. A legend states that when the British princess, and future Saint, Teneu, daughter of the king of Lothian, became pregnant before marriage, her family threw her from a cliff. She survived the fall unharmed, and was soon met by an unmanned boat. She knew she had no home to go to, so she got into the boat; it sailed her across the Firth of Forth to land at Culross where she was cared for by Saint Serf; he became foster father of her son, Saint Kentigern or Mungo. The location of the 17th century Parish Church of Culross is, like the original Abbey, on a hillside overlooking the coastal town of Culross. The church complex consists of the choir of the abbey, the sixteenth century tower and a northern aisle, both of which had been built after the demolition of the original abbey nave in around 1500. This newly formed Parish Church replaced the West Kirk, the former parish church which had become ruinous by this time. In The Way Out in the Outlander TV series the old West Kirk is blamed for Tammas Baxter’s illness, the villagers believing him to be possessed after visiting the kirk. Jamie takes Claire to the site of the Black Kirk. While there he explains how young boys would visit the kirk as a dare, and sometimes eat berries and wood garlic. Claire realises that the wood garlic is actually lilly of the valley, the cause of Tammas’s illness. The historic town of Culross, in Fife, has been used in several Outlander episodes. The town is best remembered as being used as Cranesmuir in season 1. The Mercat Cross, in the centre of Culross, acted as the centre of Cranesmuir. Here is located Geillis Duncan’s house and the historically picturesque town square where Geillis is sentenced to burn for being a witch. It is also here that Jamie and Claire rescue the thief, Tammas, when his ear is pinned to the post. With narrow roads, the streets of Culross, during the Outlander episodes, were almost free from traffic, making it easy to imagine life in the 18th century. The Outlander cast and crew returned to Culross for season 4 filming. This time, with Nell Hudson and Sophie Skelton, filming took place outside a house near Mercat Cross. This was for scenes involving Bree, Laoghaire and Joanie, when Laoghaire rescues Bree from the cold, then later discovers that she is Jamie’s daughter. Laoghaire’s home can be seen, near Mercat Cross, on Little Causeway. The most complete example of a burgh in the 17th and 18th centuries, Culross is acknowledged as one of the most picturesque villages in Scotland.
