Spring Road Trip Drive To Limekilns Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland Spring travel video of a road trip drive, with Scottish music, on visit to the village of Limekilns in Fife. The village is located on the shore of the Firth of Forth, around 3 miles South of Dunfermline. Limekilns is an old settlement dating back to the 14th century. In its early days Limekilns was mainly a fishing village, with the large natural harbour, sheltered by the rocky ridge known as The Ghauts, providing docking facilities for small to medium transport and cargo ships. From here ships traded with the ports in the Baltic Sea and France until the seventeenth century when the Union of the Crowns saw the royal interests move south to London, england. For many centuries Limekilns was also the northern terminus for a ferry linking it to Bo'ness on the southern side of the Forth. This found an echo in Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped: and it was from Limekilns that David Balfour and Alan Breck were carried across the Forth in a rowing boat.

George Thomson, born 1757, died 1851, was born in Limekilns, Fife, Scotland. He was a noted collector of the music of Scotland, a music publisher, and a friend of the poet Robert Burns. He was clerk to the board of trustees in Edinburgh for 60 years. His A Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs for the Voice came out in five volumes between 1799 and 1818, and included contributions from Burns, Walter Scott and Thomas Campbell. Thomson published folksong arrangements by Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Nepomuk Hummel.
