Old Photograph Miner's Welfare Home Troon Scotland

Old photograph of the Miner's Welfare Home in Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland. Situated at the top of Wood Road and overlooking the West of Scotland Shipbreaking Company, the harbour and the sea, the building was at one time known as Portland Villa when it was the home of Adam Wood, one of the town's most efficient harbour masters. It was built as a result of the passing of the Mining Industry Act of 1920 that the Miners Welfare Fund came into existence and a committee was formed, representative of the Ayrshire Coal-owners' Association and of the Ayrshire Miners' Union. It was a haven, of infinite value to the wives and children of Ayrshire miners, and, some 30 years later, also to the husbands, the only qualification being that the man had to be a miner. Troon is located about 8 miles north of Ayr and 3 miles north west of Glasgow Prestwick Airport. Troon is home of the Royal Troon golf course, one of the hosts to the Open Golf Championship. The course is chosen to host this annual event roughly every seven years.
