Old photograph of McMaster Hall in Girvan in South Ayrshire, Scotland. Born in Kirkoswald parish in 1841, Mr McMaster became a successful banker in Canterbury. He attributed much of his success to his teacher Mr Forrester and his schooling in Girvan. He famously provided the funds to build a new town hall in Girvan, in the early 1900s. The McMaster Hall was reduced to a shell in a terrible fire in 1939, and was demolished in the 1950s. McMaster died in 1931, aged 89, so never knew of the disaster which befell the hall. In his will, he left bursary cash for boys attending Girvan High School to go to university in Glasgow or Edinburgh.
