Old photograph of Crofters carding and spinning wool outside a cottage on the Shetland Islands, Scotland. As early as the 1600s Shetland knitters traded mittens and stockings with Dutch and English fishermen. Processing wool became so second nature that women frequently carded or knitted while walking between crofts, tending livestock, or gathering peat.
