Old photograph of children collecting Whelks on the shores of Loch Ewe by Aultbea, a small fishing village in North West Highlands located twenty miles from Ullapool, Scotland. The nearest railway station is at Achnasheen which has trains either to Inverness or through scenic Plockton to Kyle of Lochalsh. There is also a ferry service to the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, from Ullapool. In Scotland, the word " whelk " is also used to mean the periwinkle.
