Old photograph of the Primary School in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. This Scottish school was built in 1875. It was enlarged in 1894 and again in 1903. Scotland established a strong tradition of parish schools from the late 17th century, with acts in 1633 and 1696 mandating a school and master in every parish, funded by local landowners. Towns also ran their own schools, creating a widespread network, especially in the Lowlands.
