Old photograph of Balbegno Castle by Fettercairn located North West of Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This Scottish castle was built was first built in 1569 in the time of John, the second of the Woods, proprietors of Balbegno And Thanes of Fettercairn. William Gladstone, who served as prime minister four times between 1868 and 1894, often visited the estate after it was bought by his family in 1829. He is said to have been so taken by it that he tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade his father to leave it to him over his older brother, Thomas. Liberal politician Gladstone was the oldest ever prime minister when he finally resigned at the age of 84. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer on four occasions and was committed to low public spending and to electoral reform. In his final years as a politician he proposed home rule for Ireland twice but was defeated by the House of Commons in 1886 and denied by the House of Lords in 1893. Gladstone believed his early experience in estate management was useful when he was chancellor.

Old Photograph Parish Church Gordon Scotland
Old photograph of the Parish Church in Gordon, Berwickshire, Scotland. The first Gordon on record is Richard of Gordon, previously of Swinton, said to have been the grandson of a famous knight who slew some monstrous animal in the Merse during the time of King Malcolm III of Scotland. This Richard was Lord of the Barony of Gordon in the Merse. The name is said to derive from the Gaelic Gor Dun meaning great fort. The de Gordons held the lairdship of Gordon for over two centuries and were thought to have built a castle at the former hamlet of Huntly just to the north; they still held lands up to the 18th century. The Gordon family are the ancestors of the Dukes of Richmond and Gordon and of the Marquis of Huntly. In 1171, the chapel at Gordon, dedicated to St. Michael, was transferred by the monks of Coldingham to their counterparts at Kelso in return for the church at Earlston. The present church was built in 1763 and is a part of the Church of Scotland.

The name Gladsmuir stems from the Scots word gled, meaning a bird of prey, usually a buzzard, combined with muir; the Scots form of moor, thus Buzzard's Moor might loosely translate Gladsmuir into English. The philanthropist George Heriot, jeweller to James VI, King of Scots and founder of Heriot's Hospital, later George Heriot's School, in Edinburgh, was born in Gladsmuir. The old ruined kirk can still be seen and explored. The graveyard contains several graves from both world wars.

Old Photograph Craigiehall Temple Scotland
Old photograph of the Temple at Craigiehall near Cramond, Edinburgh, Scotland. This Scottish building was located at the summit of Lennie Hill. Charles Hope Weir had this ornamental temple built in 1759. The structure was burned by vandals in the early 1970s, and in 1977 the upper storey was removed as a hazard to aviation, following the development of a new longer runway at nearby Edinburgh Airport. Charles Hope Weir, born 8 May 1710, died 30 December 1791, was a Scottish politician. He was the second son of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun and Lady Henrietta Johnstone, daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale. Old Photograph Guddling For Trout In River Tay Highland Perthshire Scotland
Old photograph of men guddling for trout in the River Tay in Highland Perthshire, Scotland. Guddling is a Scots word used to describe attempts to catch fish with your bare hands. Also known as Trout tickling it is the art of rubbing the underbelly of a trout using fingers. If done properly, the trout will go into a trance like state after a minute or so, and can then easily be thrown onto the bank of the river. The technique was a common practice used by boys, poachers and working men in times of economic stress, particularly during the 1930s depression. Poachers using the method required no nets, rods or lines or any other incriminating equipment if apprehended by the police or gamekeepers. In Scotland the technique is sometimes called ginniling. The practice is currently illegal under most circumstances in Britain. A related method of catching catfish by hand is called noodling in the U.S.A.

Old Photograph Barony and Castle of Kilbirnie Scotland
Old photograph of Barony and Castle of Kilbirnie by Kilbirnie in North Ayrshire, Scotland. This Scottish castle is also known as the Place of Kilbirnie, The Place, or Kilbirnie House. Kilbirnie Castle is said to be the site where in 1263 the Scots mustered under Alexander III before fighting Norwegian forces in the Battle of Largs. The building is in two quite distinct parts: one a tower built in about 1470 for Malcolm Crawford and his wife, Marjory Barclay, an heiress and the last of her line; the other part is dated to 1627. The Honourable Patrick Lindsay purchased the castle and estate of Glengarnock in 1677 from Richard Cuninghame, the last of the Cuninghames of Garnock. In 1707 both baronies were united in the Barony of Kilburnie. The building was destroyed by fire early in the morning of 1 May 1757 during construction works, and never rebuilt. The 19th Earl of Crawfurd, his infant daughter Jean, later a Countess of Eglinton, and domestics had little time to escape. The family moved to the Barony manse at first and later to Bourtreehill House near Irvine. Lady Crawfurd was the eldest daughter and heiress of Robert Hamilton of Bourtreehill.

Old Photograph Ochil Hills Hospital Scotland
Old photograph of Ochil Hills Hospital near Milnathort, Perthshire, Scotland. This Scottish hospital was built in 1902 as a tuberculosis sanatorium. Old Photograph Clarkston Scotland
Old photograph of cottages, church and car in Clarkston in East Renfrewshire, Scotland. When a new road from Paisley to East Kilbride was built through the area in the 1790s, a toll point was set up where it crossed what was then the main route from Glasgow to Kilmarnock. A man named John Clark built a house at the toll, and the name Clarkston came to be used for the locality. The Maxwell family, owners of the Williamwood Estate, on which Clarkston was situated) advertised the creation of a new village there in 1801, but initially it grew slowly. Clarkston at this time had no industry of its own, and villagers were mainly employed in the mills at nearby Netherlee. The area began to expand more rapidly following the opening of Clarkston railway station by Busby Railways in the village in 1866, and later the expansion of the Glasgow tram network to Clarkston in 1921. The 1920s also saw the final breaking up of the Williamwood Estate, encouraging further house building.

Loch Fyne is a sea loch on the west coast of Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It extends 40 miles inland from the Sound of Bute, making it the longest of the sea lochs. Loch Fyne has a reputation for its oyster fishery, and as a consequence the loch has given its name to the locally owned Loch Fyne Oysters and to the associated Loch Fyne Restaurants. It is also notable for its herring fishing industry, and hence the famous Loch Fyne Kipper, originally caught using the drift net method. In the mid 19th century, Loch Fyne was the centre of the battle between the traditional drift net fishermen and the new trawl net fishermen who sprang up around Tarbert and Campbeltown in 1833.

Old photograph of St. Abb's Head Lighthouse in the Borders of Scotland. St. Abb's Head is a rocky promontory at the village of St. Abbs, Berwickshire. A signal station was established on the cliffs before 1820 and the facilities were shared by Trinity House and Her Majesty's Coastguard. The Northern Lighthouse Board recommended the building of a lighthouse at St. Abbs Head after the sinking of the Martello on Carr Rock in 1857. The lighthouse was designed and built by the brothers David Stevenson and Thomas Stevenson and assisted navigation before and after sight of the Bell Rock and Isle of May lights disappeared from view. The light began service on 24 February 1862 and initially used oil to generate its light, it was converted to incandescent power in 1906 and to electricity in 1966 and finally automated in 1993. Before automation the lighthouse was staffed by three full-time keepers whose duties included keeping detailed weather records.

Tour Scotland Video Night Walk In Rain To The Fish And Chip Shop In Scone By Perth Perthshire
Tour Scotland video of a night walk in the rain to visit the Fish and Chip Shop in Scone by Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.
Fish and chips became a stock meal among the working classes in Scotland and England as a consequence of the rapid development of trawl fishing in the North Sea, and the development of railways which connected the ports to major industrial cities during the second half of the 19th century, so that fresh fish could be rapidly transported to the heavily populated areas. British fish and chips were originally served in a wrapping of old newspapers but this practice has now largely ceased, with plain paper, cardboard or plastic being used instead.
