Old Travel Blog Photograph World War One Red Cross Nurse Fossoway Perthshire Scotland
Old travel Blog photograph of a World War One Red Cross Nurse in Fossoway, Perthshire, Scotland. During World War One branches of the Red Cross had groups of volunteers called Voluntary Aid Detachments, often abbreviated to VAD. Voluntary Aid Detachment members themselves came to be known simply as VADs. Famous women who volunteered for the Red Cross during the war include: Agatha Christie who served as a VAD nurse at a hospital in Torquay, England. Enid Bagnold, author of National Velvet and The Chalk Garden. She served in London as a VAD. The Parish of Fossoway was combined with the parish of Tullibole which is one of the oldest parishes in Scotland and records show that it was in existence before 1574. In 1614 the parishes were combined when the church at Tullibole was abandonded. It is said that Fossoway churchyard was used, in the 17th century, by a coven of Scottish witches, eleven of whom were burned at the stake in the village of the Crook of Devon.

Old Travel Blog Photograph The Manse Glendevon Scotland
Old travel Blog photograph of the Manse in Glendevon, Perthshire, Scotland. A manse is a clergy house inhabited by, or formerly inhabited by, a minister, usually used in the context of Presbyterian, Methodist, United church, Baptist and other traditions. Ultimately derived from the Latin mansus, " dwelling ", from manere, " to remain ", by the 16th century the term meant both a dwelling and, in ecclesiastical contexts, the amount of land needed to support a single family. Many notable Scots have been called " sons, or daughters, of the manse", and the term is a recurring point of reference within Scottish media and culture. When selling a former manse, the Church of Scotland always requires that the property should not be called " The Manse " by the new owners, but " The Old Manse " This Scottish glen is located near the small town of Auchterarder and Gleneagles Hotel. The glen stretches south eastwards from the source of the River Devon to Yetts o' Muckhart.
