Old photograph of the War Memorial in Tarfside, Angus, Scotland. During World War 2, a secret unit was based in the area known as the " Tarfside Patrol " This was led by Sergeant W. D. Kidd, who reported to the Group Commander Captain H. A. Ferrier, and Lieutenant A.J Mackie. An underground base would have been made which the patrol would have gone into hiding if the German's had invaded. Tarfside is a small Scottish village located in the upper course of the Glen Esk valley of the River North Esk around nine miles north of Edzell. Tarfside has a footpath to nearby Loch Lee, and the area is much enjoyed by walkers.

Old Photograph King Robert The Bruce Cave Kirkpatrick Fleming Scotland


Old photograph of the King Robert The Bruce cave in a sandstone cliff on the Cove Estate in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. After being defeated at a battle, Bruce escaped and found a hideout in this cave. Hiding there for three months, Bruce was at the lowest point of his life. He thought about leaving the country and never coming back. While waiting, he watched a spider building a web in the cave's entrance. The spider fell down time after time, but finally he succeeded with his web. So Bruce decided also to retry his fight and told his men: " If at first you don't succeed, try try and try again ".

Old Photograph War Memorial Newtyle Scotland


Old photograph of the War Memorial in Newtyle, Angus, Scotland. A monument in the form of an obelisk about 19 feet high, to commemorated the men of Newtyle who fell in the Great War, was unveiled by the Earl of Strathmore. On the two sides are the following names: David Anderson, Robert Bain, Duncan Beaton, George Bell, Alex Brown, Andrew Cant, Frank Couper, James Couper, Alex Fleming, Fred Geekie, R.J.H. Johnstone, John McKenzie, W. McLaren, Andrew McQueen, James McQueen, George Mann, Benjamin Milne, Alex Millar, David Mitchell, Alex Spence. Headed by Pipe Major A. Lamond, a procession of Boy Scouts, ex soldiers, and the general public marched to the site of the memorial. Reverend Robert Wood, Parish Church, presided at the unveiling ceremony, and a prayer was offered by Reverend Walker, U.F. Church. The original village of Newtyle was centred around the church and what are now Kirkton Road and Smiddy road. Hatton Castle to the south and Newbigging to the north lie within the parish boundary.

The distance from Newtyle to Glasgow and Paisley is 85 miles

Old Photograph War Memorial Tigerton Scotland


Old photograph of the War Memorial in Tigerton, East of Kirkton of Menmuir in Angus, Scotland. The memorial to the men belonging to the Memmuir district of Forfarshire was unveiled at Tigerton on Sunday by Captain Scott Erskine, Balhall. The monument is of Aberdeenshire granite, and contains the names of 17 soldiers, three of them being brothers. A religious service was conducted by Reverend D. A. Vipont and Reverend A. Munro.

Old Photograph Sea Wall Arbroath Scotland


Old photograph of women walking on the sea wall at the harbour in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland. In 1394 the Abbot John Gedy and the monks of Arbroath Abbey, and the townsmen of Arbroath, made an agreement with regard to the building of a harbour. Whatever the method of its construction, the first harbour was most probably a modest affair. In 1839, the old harbour was considerably improved, and was enlarged.
