Old photograph of the visit of King Edward VII to North Berwick, Scotland. Edward VII, born Albert Edward; 9 November 1841, died 6 May 1910, was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910. The eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward was related to royalty throughout Europe. Before his accession to the throne, he served as heir apparent and held the title of Prince of Wales for longer than any of his predecessors. During the long reign of his mother, he was largely excluded from political power, and came to personify the fashionable, leisured elite. He travelled throughout Britain performing ceremonial public duties, and represented Britain on visits abroad. His tours of North America in 1860 and the Indian subcontinent in 1875 were popular successes, but despite public approval his reputation as a playboy prince soured his relationship with his mother.

Old Photograph Douglas Square Newcastleton Scotland

Old photograph of the Thomas Davidson shop on Douglas Square in Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders, Scotland. Newcastleton was built as a result of the land clearances in the 1790s when people were forced to move from Old Castleton village. The present village is within the historic boundaries of Roxburghshire, a few miles from the border of Scotland with England. The village is in Liddesdale and is on the Liddel Water, and is the site of Hermitage Castle.

Old Photograph Scaraben Hills Lybster Sotland

Old photograph of the Scaraben Hills behind Lybster, Caithness, Scotland. Scaraben is a long ridge almost three miles long with three rounded quartzite summits. There are excellent views of the Caithness coastline. The Sinclairs of Lybster have long roots running back to the Sinclair earls who ruled Caithness that was once a much larger area taking in much of Sutherland. Tracing further back the family has connections to the Norwegian earls who controlled the north of Scotland for centuries.

Old Photograph Bridgend Road Dunbeath Scotland

Old photograph of cottages on Bridgend Road in Dunbeath, Caithness, Scotland. This Scottish village was the birthplace of Neil Gunn, born 1891, died 1973, author of The Silver Darlings, Highland River etc., many of whose novels are set in Dunbeath and its Strath. Prince George, Duke of Kent, was killed when his Short Sunderland flying boat crashed on a Dunbeath hillside on 25 August 1942. Dr John N Sutherland, graduate of Glasgow, St Andrews and Edinburgh Universities, former Professor of Virtual Reality at Gifu University in Japan, founder of video games as an academic discipline, was brought up in Dunbeath and attended Dunbeath Primary School and Dunbeath Parish Church.

Old Photograph Bernisdale Isle Of Skye Scotland

Old photograph of Bernisdale, Isle Of Skye, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. Scottish Gaelic: Beàrnasdal, is a small township, near the head of Loch Snizort Beag, 2 miles north west of Skeabost. Loch Snizort is a sea loch in the north west of the Isle of Skye between the Waternish and Trotternish peninsulas. It is fed by the River Snizort, originating in the hills east of Bracadale. The mouth of Loch Snizort gives access to the lower Minch and contains the Ascrib Islands. Sea fishing in Loch Snizort yields mackerel, pollock, and ling.
