Old Photograph Kenmuir Masonic Lodge Springburn Glasgow Scotland


Old photograph of laying the foundation stone of Lodge Kenmuir in Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland. Robert Gibson was one of the most influential figures in the History of Lodge Kenmuir. He was a Past Master of Lodge Thistle No 87, aged 51, when he joined Kenmuir, a Tailor to trade, he resided at 497 Springburn Road and was to be Master for 9 times over the period 1885 to 1895. He was to be the main driving force of the Lodge during this period. Springburn developed from a small rural hamlet at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Its industrial expansion began with the establishment of a chemical works by Charles Tennant on the newly opened Monkland Canal at nearby St. Rollox in 1799. Later in the 19th century the construction of railway lines through the area led to the establishment of Railway works and the village became a parish in its own right. The Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway first opened in 1831 to supply the St. Rollox Chemical Works and the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway was opened in 1842. Later, the City Union Line was extended to Springburn in 1871 and the Hamiltonhill Branch Line opened in 1894. Initially located outwith the Glasgow boundary, the area was eventually absorbed by the City of Glasgow Corporation in 1872.

Tour Scotland Photograph Of A Painting By William Collins


Tour Scotland photograph of boys salmon fishing painting by William Collins who often painted in Scotland. Collins was born on 8 September 1788 in Great Titchfield Street, London, England. He was the son of William Collins Senior, an Irish born picture dealer and writer. In 1807, he entered the schools of the Royal Academy, and exhibited at the Academy for the first time in the same year. In 1822 he married Harriet Geddes, sister of the portrait painter Margaret Sarah Carpenter. He continued to exhibit and travel in England and Scotland, and his art enjoyed great popularity. In 1828 he made a tour of the Netherlands and Belgium, living for short time in Boulogne in 1836. From 1840 to 1842 Collins was librarian to the Royal Academy and in 1843 he moved to a large house at 1 Devonport Street, Hyde Park Gardens. In 1840 he visited Germany, and in 1842 the Shetland Islands. Collins died from heart disease, in Devonport Street, on 17 February 1847, and was buried in the cemetery of the church of St. Mary, Paddington.

Tour Scotland Photograph Portrait Of A Girl Painting By David Foggie


Tour Scotland photograph of a portrait of a girl painting by David Foggie, who was born to parents James and Margaret Foggie on 31 December 1878 in Dundee, Scotland. David started his studies at the Dundee School of Art in 1887, where 10 years later he was appointed Pupil Assistant and joined the Dundee Graphic Arts Association. The following year he left for Belgium, where he studied at the Antwerp Academy. On his return in 1904 he built a house at Lucklawhill overlooking Leuchars and Balmullo in Fife, and in the following year helped found the Tayport Artists Circle. In 1920 he took a post teaching at Edinburgh College of Art. At the time of his death, on 2 June 1948, David Foggie was a household name all over Scotland. Since that time he had sunk into obscurity, but enjoyed a revival in popularity with the 2004 Dundee exhibition of an extensive collection of his work. Foggie's works are found in the National Galleries of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, and many public and private collections.

Tour Scotland Photograph Of A Painting By William Strang


Tour Scotland photograph of a painting by William Strang, who was born on 13 February 1859 in Dumbarton, Scotland. He was the son of Peter Strang, builder, and educated at the Dumbarton Academy. He worked for fifteen months in the counting house of a firm of shipbuilders before going to London, England, in 1875 when he was sixteen. There he studied art under Alphonse Legros at the Slade School for six years. Strang became assistant master in the etching class, and had great success as an etcher. He was one of the original members of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers, and his work was a part of their first exhibition in 1881. Some of his early plates were published in The Portfolio and other art magazines. William married Agnes McSymon, also from Dumbarton, in 1885. They had four sons and one daughter. William died on 12 April 1921.
