It is in Dumfries and Galloway, near the mouth of the River Esk and was historically the first village in Scotland, following the old coaching route from London to Edinburgh. Gretna Green is one of the world's most popular wedding destinations. Since 1929 both parties in Scotland have had to be at least 16 years old, but they still may marry without parental consent.

Old Photographs Railway Station Wick Caithness Scotland
Old photograph of the railway station in Wick, Caithness, Scotland. The station was built by the Sutherland and Caithness Railway, opening the line in 1874. On 1 July 1903, the station became the junction with the Wick and Lybster Light Railway. The last trains to Lybster ran in 1944, although the line was not officially closed until 1951. The station is now the terminus of the Far North Line, served by Abellio ScotRail services from Inverness in the Highlands.

Old Photographs Railway Station Forfar Scotland
Old photograph of the railway station in Forfar, Angus, Scotland. The Arbroath and Forfar Railway was a railway that connected Forfar with the port town of Arbroath. It opened in 1838 and it was successful in making an operating profit, but it was always desperately short of capital. When the Aberdeen Railway was authorised in 1845, it leased the Arbroath and Forfar line to form part of its main line connecting Forfar and Aberdeen; it opened in 1848. Almost all of the Arbroath and Forfar Railway was closed in 1967.

Old Photographs Railway Station Carstairs Scotland
Old photograph of the railway station in Carstairs, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The station is situated close to the point at which the lines from London Euston. England, to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh diverge. Constructed originally by the Caledonian Railway, the station is operated today by Abellio ScotRail and is also served by one First TransPennine Express trains service day between Preston and Glasgow Central. Carstairs was always an important junction station where northbound West Coast Main Line trains were split into separate portions for Glasgow, Edinburgh and, to a lesser extent, Stirling and Perth, Perthshire. and for the corresponding combining of southbound trains.
