Old Photograph High Street Errol Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of a thatched cottage, horses and carriages, houses and people on the High Street in Errol, Carse of Gowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Errol is located about halfway between Dundee and Perth. Errol is known for its reeds, which used to be collected up to a few years ago to make thatched roofs. These reeds grow in the banks of the River Tay and act as home to a fairly uncommon bird called the bearded tit. Errol has a large church, built in 1831, known as the Cathedral of The Carse. The street's name is probably derived from the fact that cows were herded down it for market days.

Old Photograph Father And Daughter Larbert Scotland

Old photograph of a father and daughter outside a house in Larbert located two and half miles from Falkirk, Scotland. From the late 18th century until the middle of the 20th century heavy industry, such as boilermaking, casting and manufacturing underpinned the economy of Larbert. The Victorian era also saw the opening of the Stirling District Lunatic Asylum at Bellsdyke and Scottish National Institution for Children on the Stenhouse Estate. This made Larbert central in providing care, both locally and nationally. The lands to the south of Larbert, in the area traversed by the Antonine Wall, were strategically important to the Romans. The crossing point on the River Carron at Larbert was an important transportation route for the Romans on the road they constructed from Watling Lodge on the Antonine Wall to Stirling.

Old Photograph Eaglescairnie House Scotland

Old photograph of Eaglescairnie House in East Lothian, Scotland. There has been a house on this site since the 12th century when Emma de St. Hilary married William de Vetereponte at Bolton. A descendent, Katherine Chisholm married Walter Haliburton of Dirleton in 1432 and the house continued to pass down through the generations. That line ended in 1919 with the death of Emily Henrietta Stuart, daughter of Sir Patrick Stuart and grand daughter of the 10th Lord Blantyre of Lennoxlove. General Sir Patrick Stuart GCMG, born 10 June 1777, died 7 February 1855, was a British Army officer who became Governor of Malta. Born the son of the 10th Lord Blantyre, Stuart was commissioned into the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards in 1794. He became inspecting field officer of the militia in the Ionian Islands in 1816. He went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Scotland in 1830, and from 1836, Governor of Edinburgh Castle, and Governor of Malta in 1843 before retiring in 1847. He was promoted to full general in 1851. He died at his home, Eaglescairnie House.
