Old Photograph Paddle Steamer Jupiter River Clyde Scotland

Old photograph of the paddle steamer Jupiter on the River Clyde near Glasgow, Scotland. Jupiter was an 18 knot steamer launched for the day long excursions from Princes Pier in Gourock. She was designed to compete with the Caledonian Steam Packet ships in the Firth of Clyde and when built, she was the largest steamer sailing from Princes Pier. Prior to the First World War she moved from the Firth to Island of Arran route to become the Kyles of Bute steamer. During the First World war she served as a minesweeper. After the war she sailed to Ayr, Ayrshire, and later for various excursions including the Round the Lochs tour. In 1934 she moved to the Largs and Millport run from Wemyss Bay where she remained until the end of her career. She was sold for breaking up at Wards yard at Barrow, England, in December 1935.

Old Photograph Paddle Steamer Duchess of Rothesay River Clyde Scotland

Old photograph of the paddle steamer Duchess of Rothesay on the River Clyde near Glasgow, Scotland. Launched on April 20th 1895 by J and G Thomson at Clydebank, she was built for CSP’s Rothesay service from both Gourock and Wemyss Bay. Later transferred to a cruising role with additional railway connections from Gourock. Reboilered in 1914, then served as a minesweeper at the south of England during World War I. Returned to the Clyde but sank at her moorings on 1st June 1919 at Glasgow. Raised and returned to service in 1920 and generally on the Rothesay to Kyles service. Requisitioned for World War II service on the Clyde, Dover, Portsmouth and Harwich Essex, England. Attended the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. Beached at Brightlingsea in October 1945 and sold in 1946 to breakers in Holland.

Old Photograph South Hermitage Street Newcastleton Scotland

Old photograph of a shop, cottages, houses and children on South Hermitage Street in Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders, Scotland. Newcastleton was built as a result of the land clearances in the 1790s when people were forced to move from Old Castleton village. The present village is within the historic boundaries of Roxburghshire, a few miles from the border of Scotland with England. The village is in Liddesdale and is on the Liddel Water, and is the site of Hermitage Castle.
