Old Photograph Nigg Pier Cromarty Firth Scotland

Old photograph of Nigg Pier by the mouth of the Cromarty Firth, Scotland. The ferry crossing between Cromarty and Nigg was historically of great importance, shortening the journey north and south and allowing access to Cromarty, then an important commercial town with sea links to Southern Scotland and England. King James IV of Scotland used the ferry on several occasions when travelling north to Tain, on pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Duthac. The saint was greatly venerated in Scotland, especially during the late middle ages, and many people would have used the ferry between Cromarty and Nigg on their journey to Tain. A ferry still crosses between Cromarty and Nigg during the summer months.
