Old Photographs Dockhead Street Saltcoats Scotland

Old photograph of shops and children on Dockhead Street in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland. Saltcoats is a small town on the west coast of North Ayrshire. The name is derived from the town's earliest industry when salt was harvested from the sea water of the Firth of Clyde, carried out in small cottages along the shore. In the late 18th Century, several shipyards operated at Saltcoats, producing some 60 to 70 ships. The leading shipbuilder was William Ritchie, but in 1790 he moved his business to Belfast, Northern Ireland. By the early 19th Century the town no longer produced ships.

Old Photograph Ardpatrick Scotland

Old photograph of cottages in Ardpatrick, Argyll, Scotland. This village is at the southwestern extremity of Knapdale, along the north western shore of West Loch Tarbert, facing south west to the island of Gigha. The headland of Ardpatrick is according to legend, the landing place of St. Patrick, on his way from Ireland to the Island of Iona. Upon the formation of the Clan MacAlister, becoming independent from Clan MacDonald in 1493, their chief, Iain Dubh, Black John, created the seat of the clan at Ardpatrick. Ardpatrick House was built in 1769 for Angus MacAlester, 11th of Loup, by John Menelaws and Thomas Menelaws, from Greenock by Glasgow.

Old Photograph Thatched Cottage Tongue Scotland

Old photograph of a thatched cottage near Tongue, Northern Sutherland, Scotland. Tongue saw a key battle between a Jacobite treasure ship and two ships of the Royal Navy in 1746, which resulted in the Jacobite crew trying to slip ashore with their gold. They were then caught by the Navy, supported by local people who were loyal to Hanover, which cost Bonnie Prince Charlie valuable support prior to Culloden.
