Old Photograph Shepherd And Sheepdogs Scotland

Old photograph of a shepherd with his sheepdogs near Loch Earn Scotland. Loch Earn is the central highlands of Scotland, in the districts of Perthshire and Stirling. The name is thought to mean Loch of Ireland, and it is thought that this might derive from the time when the Gaels were expanding their kingdom of Dál Riata eastwards into Pictland.

Old Photograph Fishwives Peterhead Scotland

Old photograph of fishwives in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. A fishwife was a woman who sold fish. The word wife meant woman rather than married woman. Often the wives and daughters of fishermen, fish wives were notoriously loud and often foul mouthed, as noted in the expression, To swear like a fishwife. One reason for their outspokenness was that their wares were highly perishable and so lost value if not sold quickly.
