Old Photograph Farmer Ploughing With Horses Hamilton Scotland
Old photograph of a farmer ploughing with horses on a farm near Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Horses were first domesticated in Central Asia around 2,000 BC. Although we think of horses today as mainly being used in farming, they were originally used in warfare and transport. Julius Caesar invaded the south of Britain in 55 BC with several units of cavalry and was met by British tribes with horsemen of their own. Ploughing, on the other hand, was first done with teams of oxen in Iron Age and Roman Britain. Old Photograph Crofter Sowing Seed Island Of Harris Scotland
Old photograph of a Crofter sowing seed on the Island Of Harris, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Little is known of the history of the peoples of the Hebrides before the 6th century as they, like the rest of Scotland, were in the depths of what centuries later became known as the Dark Ages. The first written records of the islands come with the arrival of St. Columba in the 6th century. It was this Irish Scottish saint who first brought Christianity to the islands, founding several churches.
