Old Photograph Cross Cockburnspath Scotland

Old photograph of the Market Cross in Cockburnspath near Cove, Scotland. The 16th century market cross in the heart of the village has carved emblems of a thistle on two of its faces and a rose on the other two. Cockburnspath is a village in the Scottish Borders. It lies near the North Sea coast between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh. It is at the eastern extremity of the Southern Upland Way a long distance footpath from the west to east coast of Scotland. It is also the end point of the Sir Walter Scott Way and the Berwickshire Coastal Path. At the nearby village of Cove, there is a small fishing harbour.

Old Photograph Post Office Peterhead Scotland

Old photograph of the Post Office in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Peterhead was founded by fishermen and was developed as a planned settlement. In 1593 the construction of Peterhead's first harbour, Port Henry, encouraged the growth of Peterhead as a fishing port and established a base for trade. It was was also a Jacobite supporting town in the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. In particular, it was one of the Episcopalian north-eastern ports where reinforcements, plus money and equipment, were periodically landed from France during the Forty-Five.

Old Photographs Bank Street Kirriemuir Scotland

Old photograph of shops, buildings and people on Bank Street in Kirriemuir, Scotland. Kirriemuir has a history of accused witches back in the 16th century. Many of the older buildings have a witches stone built in to ward off evil. it was an important centre of the jute trade. The playwright J.M. Barrie was born and buried here. Bon Scott of AC/DC was born in nearby Forfar and lived in Kirriemuir for a short time from 1947 until 1950 when his family emigrated to Australia. Actor David Niven claimed Kirriemuir as his birthplace. Three former residents of the town have won the Victoria cross, Captain Charles Lyell, Corporal Richard Burton and Private Charles Melvin, all during the first world war.
