Old Photograph Harbour Millport Scotland

Old photograph of a bus, cars and people by the harbour in Millport on the island of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde, in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The harbour, known as Knox's Port, was built for small fishing boats and to handle trading boats that transported goods to and from the island. In 1833, a pier was added. The town became a regular port of call for Clyde Steamers and grew as a holiday resort. Millport remained an important stopping off point for steamers until the 1960s and a passenger ferry linked the pier with the mainland. This ended with the introduction of a roll on roll off ferry service between Largs and Cumbrae Slip, to the north east of the island.
