Old Photograph Noss Shetland Scotland

Old photograph of a cottage on Noss, Shetland Islands, Scotland. Noss island is separated from the island of Bressay by the narrow Noss Sound. It has been run as a sheep farm since 1900. The island had a population of 20 in 1851 but has had no permanent inhabitants since 1939. The main focus of settlement on Noss was around the low lying west side of the island at Gungstie, Old Norse for a landing place, Gungstie was built in the 1670s.

Old Photograph Vidlin Shetland Scotland

Old photograph of cottages in Vidlin on Mainland, Shetland Islands, Scotland. The village is within the parish of Nesting, at the head of Vidlin Voe, and is the heart of the old parish of Lunnasting, which centred on the early church at Lunna on Lunna Ness.

Old Photograph Town Square Kelso Scotland

Old photograph of cars in the town square in Kelso, Scotland. For some period of time the Kelso parish was able to levy a tax of 2 pence on every Scottish pint of ale, beer or porter sold within the town. The power to do this was extended for 21 years in 1802 under the Kelso Two Pennies Scots Act when the money was being used to replace a bridge across the river Tweed that had been destroyed by floods.
