Old photograph of the lily pond in the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow, Scotland. Glasgow Botanic Gardens is an Arboretum and public park located in the West End of Glasgow, Scotland. It features several glasshouses, the most notable of which is the Kibble Palace. The gardens were created in 1817, and run by the Royal Botanic Institution of Glasgow, founded by Thomas Hopkirk of Dalbeth, and were intended to supply the University of Glasgow. William Hooker was regius professor of botany at Glasgow University, and contributed to the development of the Botanic Gardens before his appointment to the directorship of Kew Gardens in London. The gardens were originally used for concerts and other events, and in 1891 the gardens were incorporated in to the Parks and Gardens of the City of Glasgow.

Old Photograph Glasgow To Alexandria Bus Scotland

Old photograph of a passenger bus from Glasgow to Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. The town's traditional industries, most importantly cotton manufacturing, bleaching and printing, are long gone. Alexandria sits on the former A82 main road between Glasgow and Loch Lomond. There are regular bus services on the route and the town has a railway station on the rail line between Balloch and Glasgow Queen Street.

Old Photograph Helliar Holm Orkney Island Scotland

Old photograph of Helliar Holm, an uninhabited island off the coast of Shapinsay, Orkney Islands, Scotland. This Scottish island is home to a 42 foot tall lighthouse, which was built in 1893 and automated in 1967. It is a tidal island that used to be connected to Shapinsay. It is still possible to walk across from the mainland during very low tides.
