Old Photograph Gypsy Cave Isle Of Skye Scotland

Old photograph of a gypsy in a cave below the cliffs by Elgol on the shores of Loch Scavaig towards the end of the Strathaird peninsula, Isle Of Skye, Scotland. The Strathaird peninsula was historically a heartland of the Mackinnons, a robustly Jacobite clan. On 4 July 1746, the Young Pretender found sanctuary at Elgol in the course of his wanderings under the protection of Clan Mackinnon of Mackinnon and Captain John Mackinnon of Elgol. The cave where he is said to have waited for a boat to the mainland. Prince Charlie’s cave, or Uamh Phrionnsa can still be visited today, a short walk to the south of the village.

Old Photograph Washing Day Stonehaven Scotland

Old photograph of washing day in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Stonehaven was a Jacobite town during the Jacobite rising of 1715, and it was a safe base for the retreating Jacobite army to stay overnight on the night of 5th of February 1716. During the Jacobite rising of 1745, Stonehaven, part of the Episcopalian north east, was again reliably Jacobite and it was one of the north eastern ports where reinforcements, plus money and equipment were periodically landed from France.
