Old Photograph Lennoxtown Scotland

Old photograph of shops, houses and people in Lennoxtown, Scotland. A Scottish town in East Dunbartonshire, at the foot of the Campsie Fells, which are just to the north. A significant event in the history of the locality was the establishment of the calico printing works at Lennoxmill during the late 1780s. Another industry which was important to the development of Lennoxtown was soon established, when in 1797, Charles Mackintosh, born 1766, died 1843, and his associates, set up chemical Alum Works near Lennoxmill. The principal products of his works was Alum, a chemical used in the textile industry. Shale and and Alum schist, the basic ingredients required in the chemical processes, were mined in the area. Because of the need to keep his industrial processes secret, these works were referred to as the Secret Works. The owner of the works, Charles Mackintosh, was famous because of his development of a waterproof fabric used to make clothing, but he, together with Charles Tennant, also devised a revolutionary bleaching powder.

Tour Scotland Video St Madoes Pictish Stone Perth Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of St Madoes Pictish Stone in the museum in Perth, Scotland. This cross-slab, which was formerly set on a plinth at the entrance to St Madoes parish church, is now in Perth Museum. The stone was recorded first by Skene in 1833, who noted that it had " fallen over and now lies flat and sunk into the earth ", but in 1853 it was set upright in a newly constructed plinth.
