Old Photograph Murraygate Dundee Scotland


Old photograph of Murraygate in Dundee, Scotland. Murraygait, now Murraygate, can be traced back to Randolph, Earl of Moray, a companion at arms of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, who came to Dundee in 1314. Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, born 1278, died 20 July 1332, was an important soldier and diplomat in the Wars of Scottish Independence, who later served as regent of Scotland. He played an important role in the Scottish victory at Bannockburn, where he commanded one of the divisions, schiltroms, of the infantry, the others being commanded by King Robert and Edward Bruce, the king's brother. In 1315 Moray accompanied Edward Bruce, the king's brother, during his invasion of Ireland. He was one of the principal leaders in the war against the English settlers in Ireland. He married Isabel, only daughter of Margaret and Sir John Stewart of Bonkyll (killed at the Battle of Falkirk), a brother of James, High Steward of Scotland,

Old Photograph Loch Achray And Trossachs Hotel Scotland


Old photograph of Loch Achray and the Trossachs Hotel, Scotland. Loch Achray was for a time the home of James " Beg " Stewart, born 1410, died 1470, of Baldorran, the son of James Mor Stewart, known as " James the Fat ", who fled into exile in Ireland when his father Murdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany was executed for treason by King James I of Scotland in 1425. James the Fat would never return to Scotland, and he was unable to inherit the Albany estates, but James " Beag " Stewart was able to secure a royal pardon and return to Scotland. The loch is now popular with anglers fishing for brown trout.

Old Photograph Dunure Scotland


Old photograph of Dunure, Ayrshire, Scotland. A small village in the South Ayrshire area of Scotland. Located on the coast of the Firth of Clyde, Dunure is near to Maybole. The remains of a prehistoric earthwork, the Dane's Hill, are located in a nearby field. Elizabeth Margaret Kennedy of Dunure was born in 1342, her father, Sir John Kennedy, was 27 and her mother, Mary Montgomery, was 17. She married John Forbes in 1375d. They were the parents of at least 8 sons. She died in 1407, in Forbes, Aberdeenshire, at the age of 65, and was buried in Aberdeenshire.

Old Photographs Aberlady Scotland


Old photograph of a vintage car, horse and cart, shop and people in Aberlady, East Lothian, Scotland. This Scottish village is located five miles northwest of Haddington and approximately 18 miles east of Edinburgh. Aberlady is a neatly restored 17th to 19th century rubblestone houses line main street. Parish church has 15th century square tower and pyramidal spire: on pavement outside is a 'loupin-on-stane' mounting stone used by farmers' wives to get on horses. Main road leads to Aberlady Bay, expanse of salt marsh, dunes and creeks.
