Old Photograph Washerwomen River Clyde Scotland

Old photograph of Washerwomen on the banks of the River Clyde, near Glasgow, Scotland. In old Scottish Mythology, if one can get between the washerwomen and the water, they were required to grant three wishes in exchange for three questions answered truthfully. There is also a tradition in Scotland of a single washer at the ford, the goddess Clotha, who gives the River Clyde its name.

Tour Scotland Hebrides Photography Book

Tour Scotland Hebrides Photography Book. Portrait of the Hebrides. A Journey to Scotland's Western Seaboard and Beyond. There are few places left in the world which possess such a mystery and fascination as the seas around Scotland. For centuries people have sung of the Hebrides; the islands have been written about, fought over, dreamt of, longed for and even to this day are still the subject of quite intense curiosity. Forming a splintered arc of some 500 islands wrapped around mainland Scotland's north-west coast, the Hebrides make up an area of breathtaking beauty, a kaleidoscope of colour, light and mood with a character created not only by the ever-changing sea and sky but by the geology, climate and still visible signs of the islands' unique social history. Almost everywhere that much sought after `away from it all, edge of the world' atmosphere seems to prevail with each individual island having its own distinctive characteristics. This book, packed with superb, evocative images captures that certain, yet sometimes indefinable atmosphere that is unique within the region. Considerable emphasis has been placed on three contrasting islands - Skye, Eigg and Harris, each with their own chapters, but not neglecting several of the remaining islands. This, coupled with an initial chapter describing the mainland western seaboard puts the Hebrides into their true island context as quite literally a place apart, a place beyond. Portrait of the Hebrides: A Journey to Scotland's Western Seaboard and Beyond.

Tour Scotland West Highland Way Photography Book

Tour Scotland West Highland Way Photography Book. Ronald Turnbull captures the highs and lows of the journey with beautiful photographs and a fascinating text that will delight those who have completed the walk and inspire those who want to. The 95 mile West Highland Way was thought out in the 1960s and opened in 1980. But in a sense it has always been here. Clansmen and cattle thieves, redcoats and Sir Walter Scott in quest of a fictional character he called Rob Roy, as well as Rob Roy himself, an honourable cattle thief, have travelled this route between the Lowlands and Lochaber. This book traces the journey of glens and low passes, under the crags and high grassy sides of seven of Scotland's hill ranges: from the Arrochar Alps of Loch Lomond to the Black Mount of Argyll, the Mamores and Ben Nevis. Along the way we see wild goats, the red deer of Rannoch, the golden eagle, and the meadow pipit. We enjoy purple orchids, wild heather and golden birches and walk through fields of yellow asphodel. Geologically, the West Highland Way is an outing from the Old Red Sandstone of the so-called Lowland Valley, through the grey schists of the Southern Highlands, to the great volcanic cauldron of Glencoe. As it unfolds underfoot, it's an ever-changing vista of heather and oakwood, of lochside and riverside, but also a journey through the whole life and history of Celtic Scotland.
