Tour Scotland Video St Monans Church East Neuk Of Fife
Tour Scotland video of the old church by the sea in St Monans, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. St Monans Church is situated within its kirkyard cemetery just to the west of the village on the very edge of the sea. It has a very dramatic setting, perched on a low rock, reached over a small valley with a burn. As seen from most directions it has the sea as a backdrop. A more modern cemetery stands further westwards on the upper slopes of the little hill. This contains the local war memorial. Standing at the extreme west end of this a romantic ruin can be viewed across fields, again perched on the sea edge. It is often said that St Monans is the church nearest the sea in the whole of Scotland.

Tour Scotland Photograph Video St Monans Church
Tour Scotland video of the famous old church at St Monans, 12 miles South of St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. The origins of St Monans Parish Church date back to 875 when St Monan, or possibly one or more of his bones, was buried here and a shrine was established to venerate his memory. In 1346 King David II was wounded by two barbed arrows at the battle of Neville's Cross. One could not be extracted, but miraculously removed itself from his wound after David had made a pilgrimage to the shrine of St Monans. To give thanks he ordered the building of a church on the site.

Tour Scotland Autumn Photograph St Monans Church East Neuk of Fife
Tour Scotland Autumn photograph of St Monans Church, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. This church is located within its kirkyard just to the west of the village on the very edge of the sea. It is indeed said to be the church nearest the sea in the whole of Scotland. The church, one of the finest remaining from the Middle Ages in Scotland, was built by King David II Bruce (1329 to 1371), initially for a small house of Dominican friars. It later became the Church of Scotland parish church. This area is part of the Fife Coastal Walking Path which links three of the celebrated East Neuk fishing villages of St Monans, Pittenweem and Anstruther, and can be very beautiful.
