Old Photograph Taymouth Castle Scotland

Old photograph of Taymouth Castle, Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland. This Scottish castle largely dates from the 19th century, though Taymouth Castle stands on the site of the ancient Balloch Castle which was built in 1550 for Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy, descendent of Duncan Campbell, 1st Lord Campbell. Sir Colin's son, Sir Duncan Campbell, was made a baronet in 1625. King James VI visited the castle in August 1582. Sir Duncan Campbell's descendent John Campbell was created Earl of Breadalbane and Holland in 1681. In 1720 the 2nd Earl commissioned William Adam to remodel the house and lay out extensive formal gardens. The 2nd Earl's son oversaw further changes in the 1750s, and by the 1780s the formal gardens had been replaced with a picturesque landscape. The present castle was built to the designs of the brothers James and Archibald Elliot.

Tour Scotland Photograph And Video Kenmore Church

Tour Scotland photograph of the church in Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland. Built in 1760 by architect E. William Baker, it partly incorporates the walls of the earlier 1669 Kirk. It was then remodelled in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. Its tower was heightened drawing greater attention to it. It must have been a difficult time for the people of Kenmore during the upheaval of the Reformation. Their Church had been served for over a hundred years by “Vicars” saying mass in Latin. Although few could have understood the service it was for them the only form they knew. Then came the great change. William Ramsay was put “ in possession of the Manse and gleib land occupied in times past by the Vicars ”, but stayed only a short time. He was followed bya Reader, Duncan Maclagan. After the Reformation, the Church did not have sufficient ministers for all the parishes in the land and there was a particular shortage of ministers able to speak in the Gaelic tongue. So we find in 1574 that one Duncan Macaulay became minister not only of Kenmore but of Fortingall, Dull, Weem, Foss and Grantully as well. From all accounts he worked very hard to give his parishioners a sound knowledge of the scripture, and it was during his incumbency that the new Church was built on the site of the present building, after the laird had led a petition of the parishioners to have a new Church at Kenmore.
