Tour Scotland short 4K Autumn travel video of a Scotsman wearing a kilt and Sporran and walking by trees and Carsluith Castle on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit and trip to Dumfries and Galloway, Britain, United Kingdom. The castle began as a simple, oblong, three storey stone block. It was built by James Lindsay of Fairgirth, the Chamberlain of Galloway, whose family held the lands at the time. The estate passed by marriage to the Broun or Brown family in the early 1500s. Around 1568, they converted the building into an L-shaped tower house. The Brouns engaged in a bloody, generations-long feud with the Protestant McCullochs of nearby Barholm Castle. In 1579, John Broun was heavily fined after his son skipped court to avoid a murder charge for killing the McCulloch laird. The castle’s most famous resident was likely Gilbert Broun, the last Abbot of Sweetheart Abbey. He fiercely resisted the Reformation, continuing to celebrate illegal Catholic Masses. He was accused of hiding Jesuit priests at Carsluith and was arrested in 1605, eventually dying in exile in Paris, France. The Broun family occupied the castle until 1748, when James Broun, a London merchant, sold the estate to finance the family's emigration to India. The castle was never lived in again.
