Tour Scotland 4K Autumn travel video of a road trip drive, East on the A94 route, with Scottish bagpipes music, on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Britain, United Kingdom.. The Scottish name Coupar is a habitational name thought to be taken on from the place name Cupar in Fife, which is probably of Pictish origin, with an unknown meaning. The Romans established a marching camp on what is now the eastern edge of the town. The surrounding valley was heavily active during the Pictish era. By the early medieval period, Coupar Angus was designated a royal thanage, governed by a baronial thane on behalf of the King, indicating it was already a highly important settlement. In 1645, the town was plundered and burned by the royalist commander Alexander Macdonald, Alasdair Mac Colla, under the orders of the Marquis of Montrose. Coupar Angus was created a burgh of barony in 1607, giving it the right to hold weekly markets. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the town boomed due to the linen, jute, and flax manufacturing industries. It was also famous across Scotland for its heavy horse markets, where farmers gathered every March to trade powerful draught horses before the crop sowing season. Coupar Angus holds a unique place in veterinary history as the birthplace of the Scottish Fold cat breed. In 1961, a white barn cat named Susie, who possessed a natural genetic mutation that caused her ears to fold forward, was discovered on a farm near the town by a local shepherd. Every registered Scottish Fold cat in the world today can trace its lineage back to her. As an English name Coupar was occupational for a cooper, that is, a maker of barrels. Spelling variations of this family name include: Coupar, Cooper, Cowper, Couper, Copper and others. Thomas Coupar settled in Virginia, America, in 1606; John Coupar arrived in America in 1793.
