Tour Scotland short 4K Autumn travel video clip of a Scotsman wearing a kilt and sporran and walking by an Otter monument on ancestry, genealogy, history visit and trip to the coast Dumfries And Galloway, Britain, United Kingdom. Perched on the lichen covered rocks of Craigengour overlooking Luce Bay, the monument specifically celebrates the renowned Scottish author and naturalist Gavin Maxwell, born 1914, 1969, and his world famous relationship with his pet otter. Gavin Maxwell was born nearby at the House of Elrig and grew up on his family’s ancient estate, Monreith House. After traveling through the Iraqi marshlands in the 1950s, he adopted an orphaned, smooth coated otter cub that was later classified as a previously unknown subspecies and named Lutrogale perspicillata maxwelli or Maxwell's otter in his honour. Maxwell brought the otter, named Mijbil, back to Scotland. Whenever he returned to visit his family seat at Monreith, he was frequently seen exercising Mijbil on the beaches below the cliffs. His experiences with the animal inspired his 1960 literary masterpiece, Ring of Bright Water, which sold over two million copies worldwide and sparked a massive public fascination with otters in Britain. The book was later adapted into a highly successful 1969 film of the same name. Tragically, Mijbil passed away after Maxwell's remote cottage in northwest Scotland caught fire in 1968. Maxwell himself died of cancer a year later. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
