Built between 1813 and 1814 during the Napoleonic Wars, it is one of only three surviving Martello towers in Scotland. It was constructed to protect British merchant convoys gathering in Longhope Sound from French and American privateers. Inspired by circular stone forts at Mortella Point in Corsica. The seaward facing wall is built to withstand heavy artillery fire. Although it never engaged in active combat, the site was updated during the 1860s due to invasion fears and later served as a naval signal post during the First World War.
