The connection between Clan Oliphant and the area dates back to 1317, when King Robert the Bruce granted lands here to Sir William Oliphant also known as Olifard. This grant served as compensation and a reward for the clan's loyal service during the Wars of Scottish Independence, which included a famous 90 day defense of Stirling Castle. The Oliphant family's direct ownership of the estates came to an end in 1617 when they were sold to a neighbouring family, the Haliburtons of Pitcur. The clan descends from a Norman stock, with early records of the name, Olifard, appearing in Northamptonshire, England, around the late 11th century via figures like Roger Olifard. David de Olifard became the progenitor of the Scottish branch after reportedly saving the life of his godfather, King David I of Scotland, at the Battle of Winchester in 1141. In return, he received land grants. Later branches of the family, particularly the Oliphants of Perthshire, were ardent supporters of the Stuart cause, participating actively in the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745.
