The castle famously known as the Castle of Spite, was commissioned by Mary Caroline, Duchess of Sutherland, widowed and later known as Duchess Blair, following a bitter legal dispute over the estate of her late husband, the 3rd Duke of Sutherland. The Sutherland family agreed to a massive financial settlement and funding for a new home on one condition: it had to be built completely outside of the family's traditional Sutherland estate lands. he Duchess deliberately chose a hillside plot in Ross-shire that sat directly across the water and overlooked the Sutherland estate, making it impossible for her estranged in laws to miss. During the Nazi occupation of Norway, the castle served as a safe haven and wartime residence for King Haakon VII of Norway and Crown Prince Olav. For roughly 60 years, it operated as one of the grandest and most unique youth hostels in the world, allowing travelers to stay in palatial surroundings for minimal cost. True to its dramatic atmosphere, the castle is famously said to be haunted by a " lady in white " named Betty.
