Located south east of Dunbar, the castle served as a crucial strategic border stronghold that guarded the main southern approach into Scotland. The original castle was constructed in the mid 1300s by the Stewart family. In 1398, ownership passed to the Hamilton family, who would remain the primary keepers of the barony for centuries, continuously extending and expanding the tower house into a larger courtyard castle. In 1403 the English knight Henry ' Hotspur ' Percy and the Scottish rebel Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas, besieged the castle. When a massive Scottish army led by the Duke of Albany marched to relieve the castle Percy and Douglas had already slipped away to the south-west to instigate an open rebellion against King Henry IV. In 1406 Siege the Duke of Albany returned, this time deploying siege engines to successfully expel the occupying forces of the Earl of Northumberland. The castle met its ultimate downfall during the bloody conflict known as the Rough Wooing. In September 1547, English forces led by Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, surrounded the area. A detachment of English musketeers surrounded the castle, picked off the defenders along the walls, burned down the main gate, and breached the basement to set the structure on fire. The final surviving Scottish defender threw himself to his death from the battlements rather than surrender. Though the Scots briefly reoccupied and partially patched the stronghold a year later, it never fully recovered. It was complete enough to serve as a base to disrupt Oliver Cromwell's lines of communication during the 1650s, but the property was eventually sold to the Nisbet family in 1633.
