The Haltadans stone circle, also spelled Hjaltadans or known locally as the Fairy Ring is an ancient Bronze Age, or late Neolithic monument located on the remote northern moorland of Fetlar island. Haltadans translates from local dialect and Norse roots to mean the " limping or lame dance ", referencing the characteristic stumbling dance attributed to mythology's little people. Local Shetland legend says the two central pillars represent a fiddler and his wife, while the outer ring of stones comprises trows, Shetland trolls or fairies. They danced and played music through the night until the first rays of the rising sun caught them unawares, instantly turning the entire group to stone.
