The site originally housed a 12th century parish church. In 1470, George, the 1st Lord Seton, established a college of priests here, which was granted full papal approval as a collegiate church in 1492. The community consisted of six priests and a provost whose primary duty was to pray for the salvation of the Seton family souls. The building is a cruciform church that remains structurally unique because it was never entirely finished and was abruptly halted by the Protestant Reformation of 1560. Following the family’s support for the Jacobite uprising, the church was ransacked in 1715 by local militia. It was later acquired by the Earl of Wemyss, who restored the structure in the late 19th century to serve as a family burial vault.
