The road passes through the wide, flat agricultural valley of Strathmore and East Perthshire. It serves as a quieter, scenic tourist alternative to the busier A90 trunk road via Dundee. The name Strathmore refers to a major lowland valley skirting the Highland boundary in Angus and Perthshire. This is Clan Lyon country a family of Norman origin, descending from the French family de Leon, who arrived in England during the 1066 Conquest. Around 1105, Roger de Leonne moved north to Scotland and was granted lands in Perthshire. Sir John Lyon was famously known as the White Lyon due to his remarkably fair complexion. Sir John later became the Chamberlain of Scotland and married the King's daughter, Princess Jean, firmly embedding the family into Scottish royalty. He was later killed in a feud with Sir James Lindsay of Crawford. John, the 4th Earl of Lyon, strongly opposed the 1707 Treaty of Union between Scotland and England. His son fought as a Jacobite during the 1715 Rising and died at the Battle of Sheriffmuir defending his regiment's colours.
