The beach is perhaps best known for its rock formation; The Three Kings beach stack. Legend has it that these 4 metre tall quartzite stacks are the grave stones of three Norse Kings who died at the Battle of Bauds in 962. Robert Burns stayed overnight at, what was then, the old town of Cullen in 1787 during his tour of the Highlands. The organs of the wife of Robert the Bruce are said to have been buried in the old church in Cullen after her death in the area. Robert the Bruce made an annual payment to he village in gratitude for the treatment of his wife's body and its return south for burial. The Moray Coast was a major filming location for The Odyssey.
