Originally built around 1526 by the powerful Lindsay family, it stands on the foundations of an earlier 14th century keep and served as a crucial defensive stronghold guarding the southern end of a strategic pass from Deeside against Highland cattle raiders. in 1558 David Lindsay, the 9th Earl of Crawford, died at the castle, underscoring its use as a high status noble residence. In 1607 the castle served as a hideout for Lord Edzell's son, David Lindsay, who fled to the remote glen after murdering Lord Spynie in Edinburgh during a family feud. 1746 following the Jacobite rising and the Battle of Culloden, the castle provided refuge to a prominent fugitive, James Carnegie, Lord Balnamoon, who was hunted by government troops. Clan Lindsay is an ancient and historically powerful Scottish Lowland clan whose roots trace back to Anglo-Norman knights who settled in Scotland during the 12th century. The head of the clan holds the Earldom of Crawford, which was created in 1398 and is the oldest surviving earldom in Scotland.
