It was built around 1475 and strategically positioned to command sweeping views over the Firth of Clyde, the Bute and Cumbrae islands, and the Ayrshire mainland. During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Sir James Lamont supported the Royalist cause. In May 1646, a massive Campbell force blockaded the castle by land and sea with ships and heavy artillery. After a two week siege, the walls were breached and the Lamonts surrendered under a promise of safe passage. The Campbells violated the surrender terms, executing over 200 clan members, many hanged from a nearby tree in Dunoon. The castle was sacked, burned, and never inhabited again. Clan Lamont is a historic Highland Scottish clan that famously ruled the Cowal peninsula in Argyll for centuries. Known for their ancient roots and a bitter, tragic rivalry with the neighbouring Clan Campbell.
