The raised beach sea cave gets its name because the paternal grandparents of the famous African missionary and explorer David Livingstone lived on a nearby croft on Ulva. Local lore states that his grandfather briefly used the cave for shelter in the late 18th century while building the family's stone croft house. The family eventually left the island in 1792 to find work in Blantyre, where David Livingstone was later born. The cave was occupied by Mesolithic hunter gatherers.
