The name Marwick originates from the Old Norse words meaning " shallow bay ". The adjacent tidal lagoon, known as The Choin, also derives from the Norse word tjörn, meaning large pool. The Kitchener Memorial at Marwick Head is a stone tower on the edge of dramatic cliffs, directly overlooking the turbulent Atlantic waters where the British cruiser HMS Hampshire sank during World War I.
