The beach extends west from the historic headland village of Burghead toward the coastal village of Findhorn. It serves as a prominent focal point for the Moray Coastal Walking Path and is highly celebrated for its rich Pictish heritage. Between AD 500 and 800, the headland was home to the largest known Pictish fort in Scotland. This massive naval and power base was protected by three rows of immense earth and stone ramparts. Between 1805 and 1809, William Young of Inverugie established a new gridplan fishing settlement on the peninsula. The construction deliberately cleared and destroyed more than half of the ancient Pictish ramparts. The town of Burghead is mainly built on a peninsula that projects north westward into the Moray Firth, meaning that most of the town has sea on three sides.
